They say an Englishman’s home is his castle – but this isn’t the case for most Brits.
More than 60 per cent say they have even considered building their dream home themselves, and 55 per cent say they are prepared to move overseas for the perfect property.
And most have a very definite vision of where they want to live – with a country retreat appealing to three out of four people.
An indoor swimming pool topped the list as an absolute ‘must-have’ in a dream home, followed closely by en-suite bathrooms for every bedroom, and a loft conversion.
The poll of 3,500 homeowners was conducted by mortgage provider Cheltenham & Gloucester in conjunction with the launch of their new promotion, which promises one lucky winner a massive £25,000 home-makeover.
The results revealed that 61 per cent would have the latest gadgets and state of the art technology installed in every room.
Whilst 60 per cent would be content with an open plan living room.
A converted barn, a Jacuzzi, open fireplaces, wooden floors and a summer house all made it onto the top ten most-wanted list.
Esther O’Reilly-Cain, spokeswoman for Cheltenham & Gloucester, said: “This survey shows that most people have huge aspirations for their home, and the list of must-haves is endless.
“We hope that by offering one lucky person the chance to win a £25,000 makeover on their home, we can at least make one dream come true.”
Two thirds of people asked would consider building their dream home from scratch if they had the money.
And a soft-hearted 52 per cent would love to have their entire family living with them.
