Instead they aim to reach an ideal lifestyle rather than a specific sized property.
Forty-six per cent of those questioned say that being mortgage-free is the ultimate goal, while only 16% dream of a mansion in the country. Even fewer (15%) aspire to a five-bedroom detached house. The most reliable indicator of having progressed is living in a desirable area (49%).
The Woolwich worked with psychologist Dr Linda Papadopoulos to analyse homeowners’ attitudes towards moving. Based on her findings, four groups emerge:
• Heaven’s Residents - 25% have reached their personal ‘heaven’ and are planning no further moves;
• Sensitive Savers - 13% have a cautious approach, saving and planning a move over many years;
• Practical Purchasers - 27% expect a move within two and 10 years, setting themselves realistic goals; and
• Serial Movers - 13% expect to be moving within two years. These are likely to be living in the South East and are more likely to be male than female.
