ANZ brings forward incoming chief’s start date

Banking major ANZ has brought forward the start date for incoming chief executive Nunos Matos (pictured) by nearly two months.

Matos was announced as the replacement of ANZ’s current chief executive Shayne Elliot last December, originally with an effective start date of 3 July. He will now take the helm on 12 May.

“With the leadership transition well progressed, we are pleased that Nuno has been able to secure the early fulfilment of his commitments with his previous employer and bring forward his start date,” ANZ group chairman Paul O’Sullivan said in a Monday statement.

“I would like to thank Shayne for leading an orderly handover as we enter the second half of our financial year,” O’Sullivan added.

Matos said he is “looking forward to moving to Melbourne and getting started on the next phase of ANZ’s evolution.

Matos most recently served as head of wealth and personal banking at HSBC, overseeing 87,000 employees and approximately 40 million customers across 35 markets. He previously held leadership roles at Santander, including global head of consumer in its retail and commercial division.

Halton to step down

ANZ has also announced the retirement of Jane Halton as director of ANZ Group from early May.

“After a distinguished career in the public service, Jane has made a valuable contribution to the Board and shareholders over many years. Her experience in public health was particularly beneficial as we navigated the COVID pandemic and we thank her for her service,” said O’Sullivan.

Alison Gerry, who has been a director of ANZ Bank New Zealand since 2019, will subsequently be added to the ANZ Group board.
