Always wanting to be a BDM and with 18 years in the industry, this Melbourne-based BDM is living his dream.

BDM in the spotlight asks a different BDM the same seven questions – giving you a weekly insight into the lives of some of the top BDM’s in the country.

Anthony Calandrella has worked with many top brokers and says what sets them apart is their approach to each customer.

How often do you see brokers in a week?
Approx 10 times a week, plus PD days/conferences and training sessions at ANZ HQ.

What do brokers want most from you?
Responsiveness, clear, concise and definitive answers, and to help them grow their business. I always do what I say I am going to do!

What is your favourite part of the job?
I’m part of a customer’s biggest decision one could make in their life. Granted our brokers carry the majority of that responsibility, I enjoy being there to support the customer and the broker whenever they need me to help make these transactions as seamless as possible.

What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
I’m fortunate enough to deal with high performing brokers and through the process I’ve noticed they share a lot of similar traits. But primarily they don’t deal with each loan as a transaction, but rather another step in a long relationship they want to forge with their customers.

Describe your ideal weekend
Spending time with my family, watching a Melbourne Victory game, and I know I’m getting old now as I don’t mind a bit of gardening! I also coach a local under 10’s soccer team and have recently obtained a coaching licence. It’s a pleasure seeing these kids progress and hopefully one of these boys can make it to the big time, because I never did!

What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
I had a broker send me some photos of a stash of cash the customer held at their home and the photo had a date stamp which was older than 3 months, he asked if we could use it as genuine savings. You can guess the answer to that!

How do you like your steak done?
That would depend on the restaurant and the chef as I trust their expertise and their recommendation.

Every Wednesday we’ll feature a different BDM from across Australia. If you’d like to be included, please email the editor.
