How often do you see brokers in a week?
I see brokers every day during the week and sometimes bump into one or two when I am riding my bike on the weekend or at a local football game. I have a lot of brokers that cycle or are involved in their local sporting clubs which I really enjoy being a part of.
What do brokers want most from you?
To find the best solution for their client. Most of the time this will involve discussing the scenario and finding the right solution within our diverse range of products, however if there is a solution that we perhaps can't provide, I like to be able to recommend another funder that may be able to assist. I believe brokers always appreciate the assistance and a quick response, even if that response may be a "No"
What is your favourite part of the job?
I get great satisfaction from working through complex scenarios and finding a solution or a way forward that makes the broker look good in the eyes of their client.
What distinguishes the best brokers you deal with?
Passion for the industry, great communication skills, an eye for detail, excellent administration skills (or the ability to hire a superstar PA!) and someone who values the long-term relationships they build with their network. The loan process can go awry occasionally, and favours need to be called in, so the best brokers know how to "win friends and influence people" rather than burning relationships over one application.
Describe your ideal weekend
Cycling long distances (preferably with a few hills) followed by good coffee and a catch up back at "The Brown Cow Cafe" one of Melbourne's great cycling Coffee stops. Catching up with family and friends, a movie with the kids or heading off to the G to watch Melbourne win would be my ideal weekend.
What’s the strangest lending scenario you’ve ever encountered?
When working for a Major Bank I was always told that if it floats, flys or eats grass, we dont finance it, so when I had the opportunity to fund a business that involved helicopters, hangars and cash out to buy a herd of "Blonde" cows (yes I am serious ...) I thought to myself, well now I have officially seen it all!
How do you like your steak done?
Medium rare, preferably with a mushroom sauce and a warm spicy coleslaw on the side, ideally it would be cooked at Squires Loft.
