CMP has learned that Ontario mortgage broker and teacher Joe White is preparing to launch a new designation for mortgage professionals based on a national education program through Seneca College.
"The industry is undergoing significant changes and we feel that it's necessary for a program of education that not only addresses these changes, but provides the skills necessary for brokerages, brokers and agents to thrive in these challenging times," said White, who has worked as a part-time program coordinator at Seneca College for 12 years.
The educational portion of the new program will consist of 10 courses - covering topics such as regulatory compliance and self-promotion skills - which will be available online and in-class. Those who have completed the courses (or have equivalent education requirements) will have to score 75% or higher on a six-hour "case-based" certification exam and provide two reference letters from lenders to achieve the designation.
"This is much more than just a designation," said White. "This is an educational program designed to provide the skills necessary to thrive in today's economy."
White, who is a principal broker at United Shields Mortgage Investment Corporation, has also authored two mortgage textbooks used by Seneca College, the single provider of mortgage broker training in Ontario.
