One in 5 properties that are at risk of flooding are not in a designated Special Flood Hazard Area.
The risk is highlighted by CoreLogic which says that 23% of residential and commercial properties are at moderate or high risk of flooding, but as they are not in FEMA’s designated SFHAs they are not required to have flood insurance.
Properties at high or moderate risk of flooding total 29 million nationwide, including those in SFHAs. Florida leads with more than 5 million (54% of the state’s total properties). Texas is next with more than 3.2 million properties (31%) while California has 3.1 million (29%).
For those homes and commercial properties outside the Special Flood Hazard Areas, Arizona has the highest share with 68% at moderate or high risk of flooding. Florida has 54% while Louisiana has 49%.
DC (4%) and Tennessee (9%) are the only states where the share of homes at risk are in single figures.
