Commenting, Paul Shamplina of Landlord Action, said: “A reform to the housing allowance system has been needed for a long time and not only the amounts that are paid, but also the way it is paid.
“We have seen a massive increase in abuse from tenants who keep their housing allowance rather than pass it on to the landlords. The new government has confirmed that they will re-instate direct payments to landlords which, along with addressing excessively generous payments which are made to some recipients, will benefit both landlords and the councils’ budgets.”
