Speaking at AMI’s annual dinner, John Gummer MP, along with the Conservative’s Shadow Minister for Housing, Michael Gove, stated that the government had mis-handled HIPs from the beginning.

Gummer said: “The majority of AMI’s members have always been against the introduction of HIPs. Regardless of where people stand on the issue, the government should have consulted more with the industry and listened to its concerns.
“The current ‘interim’ situation is a farce. Will we see any ‘four-bed houses’ marketed, if the option is ‘three beds with an extra study’? The time has come to withdraw the current proposals and introduce a more sensible measure which will also meet environmental needs.”

Gove added: “Anyone who knew anything about this policy was telling Ruth Kelly she was heading for the rocks.”
