Ex-Skipton exec to replace industry veteran
Leek Building Society has announced that John Gibson (pictured left), currently a non-executive director on the mutual’s board, has been selected as chair designate.
Gibson, who joined Leek’s board in January 2024 following a successful career at Skipton Building Society, is expected to step into the role at the society’s annual general meeting in April 2025, pending regulatory approval. He brings a background in risk management and governance, as well as a commitment to the principles of mutuality that underpin the building society sector.
Gibson’s appointment follows the tenure of Rachel Court (pictured right), who will step down as Chair after nine years. Under Court’s leadership, the mutual experienced significant growth, with increased investment in both business operations and local community initiatives.
Last June, the building society announced the appointment of Andy Deeks as its new chief executive officer.
“It’s been a real pleasure and a privilege to chair the board of Leek Building Society throughout the last decade or so,” Court said. “During an eventful period on the world stage, I’m delighted to say that the society has gone from strength to strength and has emerged as a more modern and nimbler organisation, while always remaining true to the strong values of mutuality.
“I wish John every success as he takes over the leadership of our board next year and look forward to seeing the society continue raising the bar under his stewardship.”
Commenting on his appointment, Gibson said he felt “both delighted and privileged” to succeed Court as chair of the board following her distinguished leadership.
“I do so at a time when it has never been more important for building societies to support members in meeting their aspirations of home ownership and financial wellbeing,” he added. “I have every confidence that the board and management at Leek will continue its tireless support of these objectives and the communities we serve.”
