Legal and General announces general insurance business interim results

Net written premiums at the insurer grew to £215m for the half year compared with £184m for the same period in 2003. Business through key partners and brokers continued to grow strongly.

Household business, which represents 80 per cent of Legal & General's general insurance business, produced an operating profit of £13m (£10m for 1H03), with total operating profit at £20m (£19m for 1H03).

Legal & General Insurance Managing Director Ian Viney commented, “Legal & General Insurance is delighted again to report significant growth of personal lines general insurance. We began several new and important partner arrangements last year, including Barclays, Bank of Ireland Mortgages and GMAC. We have also welcomed Chelsea Building Society on board and extended our relationships with Birmingham Midshires and Lambeth Building Society. We are now a top five household insurer in the UK and are confident that we will continue to achieve further growth for the remainder of 2004.”
