Lenders offer flood help

Lloyds TSB took out a full-page advertisement in a number of national newspapers, stating that customers could defer repayments for three months – although interest would still be applied – and apply for further advances without any fees.

Meanwhile, Halifax said it had already been helping large numbers of people who had claimed on general insurance (GI) and would try to assist mortgage clients as much as possible.

Paul Fincham, senior media relations manager at Halifax, said: “We have been helping people on the GI side and we have had assessors out on the ground and our staff working round the clock to help people as quickly as possible. However, anyone who needs help with their mortgage, regardless of their problems, we always try to offer a sympathetic ear.”

RBS Intermediary Partners and Bradford & Bingley said they would not be announcing any special initiatives but would continue to offer all those affected support through usual channels.

Mike Fry, director of Halton Insurance Service Ltd, said: “The Lloyds TSB move is decent but I’m sure every lender should look at a case and, subject to circumstances, help them out. Obviously, if people have fallen behind in the past they might be more reluctant to help with payment holidays, but I would hope everyone would get help if they need it.”
