NLA addresses energy efficiency at EU

As part of EU Sustainable Energy Week, NLA representatives travelled to Brussels, as part of the Union of International Property Owners (UIPI), to address the Commissioner for Energy Gűnther Oettinger at a conference hosted by the European Commission.

As the UK’s representative on the UIPI, which represents more than five million landlords and property owners across Europe, the NLA spoke to promote ways in which the energy efficiency of private housing can be improved without creating additional burden – such as the Green Deal.

Under the Green Deal, loans will be offered in the UK to pay for energy efficient improvements to domestic properties. The loans would be paid back through instalments funded by savings made through reduced energy bills.

David Salusbury, chairman, National Landlords Association, said: “The UK is leading the energy efficiency agenda programs and I’m proud the European Commission is looking to the UIPI to promote ways to make the private rented sector across Europe ‘greener’.

“The Green Deal shows great potential as a way to save tenants money through reduced utility bills, provide warmer homes and help the environment.

“The NLA looks forward to working with the UIPI and European Commission to share our experience of driving up standards in property with our European partners.”
