As part of Ed Milliband’s reshuffle Reynolds has been promoted from her role as shadow minister for Europe and replaces Jack Dromey at housing.
Reynolds took to Twitter following her appointment and said she was "delighted to be appointed by Ed Milliband as shadow housing minister attending shadow cabinet".
Grainia Long, chief executive of the Chartered Institute of Housing, welcomed Reynolds appointment but said she was sad to see Dromey depart from the role.
She said: “Jack Dromey has been a very effective champion for housing in the shadow cabinet, focusing on the need for more house-building as well as his political and constitutional responsibility to hold the government to account.
"He engaged very well with housing professionals to understand the issues we are facing and to try to come up with potential solutions to our housing crisis.
"This culminated in Ed Miliband’s recent pledge to provide 200,000 homes a year if Labour are elected, and the establishment of the Lyons Commission on housing.
"We are pleased to hear that his replacement, Emma Reynolds, will be attending shadow cabinet meetings, reflecting just how important housing is. We look forward to working with her in her new role.”
Reynolds promotion is one of a number of changes by Milliband as he looks to “reward some of our most talented women and newest MPs”.
The Wolverhampton MP was elected in the 2010 having previously worked as a lobbyist in Brussels tasked with helping British Companies seeking to influence EU laws.
