Five housing associations are piloting the extended Right to Buy scheme from today.
The pilots are being delivered by L&Q, Riverside, Saffron Housing, Sovereign and Thames Valley Housing Association.
The scheme will extend Right to Buy to 1.3 million housing association tenants who can buy with a discount of £103,900 in London and £77,900 elsewhere.
Under the terms of the controversial scheme every home sold will need to be replaced nationally with a new affordable home. The government hasn’t specified when or where the replacement homes will be built or if they will be in the same areas of the country.
Greg Clark, communities secretary, said: “The pilot will help inform the design and implementation of the main scheme before it is rolled out across the country following the passage of the landmark Housing and Planning Bill. Applications for the pilot scheme open today.”
The Department for Communities and Local Government declined to give any estimate of when the full scheme will be rolled out.
