A woman interviewed on the news, in a flood hit area, without insurance, said the ‘government’ – i.e. us – should pay for the damage. Why? Insuring her property is down to her and her alone. I make sure I am insured and pay my premiums each month, even though I have never claimed, so why should we have to pay because she can’t be bothered to sort herself out?

I agree that the importance of home insurance must be stressed to everyone but we shouldn’t bail people out when things go wrong and they aren’t insured.
