Madison, with a population of around 48K, has the lowest housing costs in the country along with Marion, IA; Keller, TX; Leawood, KS; and Collierville, TN.

This is one of the insights into America’s smallest cities in an analysis by WalletHub which says that small-city life can be tough to beat despite fewer resources and leisure options.

Considering factors including affordability, economic health, education and quality of life, the overall ‘best small city’ was Princeton, NJ.

Madison, AL doesn’t make the higher rankings as its low housing costs are not matched in other metrics.

Lexington, MA; Leawood, KS; Milton, MA; and Brentwood, TX; complete the top 5 best small cities.

The Villages, FL has the highest rate of homeownership in the country compared to West Hollywood, CA which has the lowest share of homeowners.

Buyers who are foodies should perhaps head to New York’s state capital Albany, which has the highest proportion of restaurants per capita; while those with a frequent craving for a Caramel Macchiato should choose Santa Monica, CA with the highest share of coffee shops per capita.
