Amid pushback from state and local lawmakers, the internet behemoth bows out of the massive deal
Amazon announced today that is has canceled plans to build a second headquarters in New York City.
The internet sales giant had planned to build a campus in Long Island City, Queens, in exchange for nearly $3 billion in state and municipal incentives, according to a New York Times report. However, the deal raised the ire of local lawmakers, who slammed the idea of providing subsidies to one of the world’s most valuable corporations.
In a statement, Amazon said that it was canceling its plans because of the pushback.
“For Amazon, the commitment to build a new headquarters requires positive, collaborative relationships with state and local elected officials who will be supportive over the long term,” the company said. “While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”
Amazon said the deal would have created more than 25,000 jobs, the Times reported.
