HUD awards over $5bn to Hurricane Harvey recovery
The Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) has awarded a grant of about $5.02 billion for recovery efforts in areas in Texas that were most impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

More than 230,000 homes were damaged in the hurricane, of which about 65,000 sustained serious damage that is not covered by other sources. Also, more than 4,000 businesses were found to not have insurance coverage or other resources for serious damage from flooding they suffered. The HUD grant addresses needs that are not met by private insurance and other federal assistance.

“As President Trump has said from the beginning, the whole federal family is with the people of Texas to help them recover from this devastating storm as quickly as possible,” HUD Secretary Ben Carson said. “HUD will work with Governor Abbott and his staff to do whatever is needed to rebuild damaged homes and to restore shuttered businesses in some of the hardest-hit areas of the state.”

HUD said it will announce additional awards to areas affected by Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Maria, and the California fires after more data become available about unmet needs in those areas.
