Agency looks to identify regulations that unnecessarily impede housing supply
The Department of Housing and Urban Development has issued a “request for information” (RFI) that seeks public comment on regulatory barriers that artificially raise the costs of affordable housing development and contribute to shortages in the country’s housing supply.
In a statement, HUD said that the RFI is a request for the public to share their knowledge and provide recommendations regarding regulations and practices that unnecessarily impede housing supply and information on innovative practices that promote increased housing supply.
“Owning a home is an essential component of the American dream,” said HUD Secretary Ben Carson. “It is imperative that we remove regulatory barriers that prevent that dream from becoming a reality. Through this request, communities across the country will have the opportunity to identify roadblocks to affordable housing and work with state, federal, and local leaders to remove them.”
The RFI is a part of the work Carson is undertaking as the chair of the White House Council on Eliminating Regulatory Barriers to Affordable Housing.
