Home prices may be reaching the stratosphere as they continue their steady rise, but bargain hunters may still find a few cities a respite from the ballooning costs of homes in the US.

Personal finance website GOBankingRates identified cities with the greatest housing affordability, comparing average home prices from the month of April last year and April this year.

The company said in a statement that the South is generally friendly to home buyers where property remains affordable.

Nine cities saw home costs fall by $5,000 or more, the company also said.
