An experienced and respected figure in the pensions and investment industry, Virginia holds a number of directorships and was previously Chief Executive of AXA Investment Managers in the UK.
Earlier this year, Virginia was appointed director of the Alberta Investment Management Corporation (AIMCo), the Canadian crown corporation which administers the $75bn investment assets of the State of Alberta. She is also chair of the Investment Committee for the £32bn Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), the UK's second largest pension scheme, which has become increasingly active alongside its global peer group.
This appointment follows a wide-ranging search and selection process.
Commenting on the appointment Colin Buchan, Non-Executive Chairman of Standard Life Investments, said: "With a career spanning more than 25 years within the financial services sector, the depth and breadth of Virginia's experience makes her an ideal addition to the board of Standard Life Investments. Her expansive knowledge of the investment industry will enable her to provide expert advice and support the strategic direction of the company.
"Since its launch in 1998, SLI has seen its third party assets grow more than eight-fold and establish a client base spanning 31 countries across the globe. Virginia will play a key role in building on this success."
